Great news! I do not have any of the BRCA mutations! Hooray! This means that I do not have a higher than normal risk of a breast cancer recurrence or of ovarian cancer. It also means that I won’t need to do a bilateral mastectomy or have a salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries). That’s one piece of uncertainty that has been removed, and I’m very relieved. The only downside I see to these results is that now I don’t have a concrete reason for having gotten breast cancer at a young age. At this point, it seems that it’s a sporadic cancer. There are several other so-called cancer genes, but not much is known about how those mutations impact future recurrences of breast cancer or of developing other cancers. The geneticist recommended that I check back every year or two to see what new information has surfaced. But for now, I’ll put that in the back of my mind and focus on treating the current cancer.
Ahhhh, I like getting good news!
